Eostre, Persephone or Proserpina

Re-telling the story of Persephone and pomegranates

... Finally, unable to bear her hunger, Persephone ate six pomegranate seeds, that bound her to the Underworld forever. Her fate was sealed. Later, Persephone admitted that she had eaten of a pomegranate.

Interesting Fact

Persephone, a vegetation goddess of planting seeds and making nature grow, goddess of spring, queen of the underworld, sometimes known as Kore or the Maiden ("the maiden of the beautiful ankles"). While most sources indicate that she was not happy to be married to Hades (Pluto) and that she had to stay in the Underworld, others assert that the truth is that she ate the pomegranate seeds deliberately, as a way of breaking free from her mother, and that she was actually contented with the way things went on finally. So, her husband would be the liberator and not the raptor, the hero and not the villain. And Persephone would have been set free into the life she wanted to live. When taken from her mother's domains and square chores into the underground (psyche/unconscious/spirit) realm and palace, Kore's name changed to Persephone. Persephone rebirths as Queen of the Underworld (psychopomp) upon her arrival in her inner world, where she springs and blossoms as she walks her path.

The exact Venus Sun conjunction at the Libra Full Moon - The myth of Persephone

Last March 27, 2013, we had our Libra Full Moon this year. With this Full Moon, Venus is in exact conjunction with the Sun. There is a great struggle and tension between the [Venus-Aphrodite aspect] and the [Mars-Pluto] aspect affecting this particular astral moment. It is the Libra/Aries axis (Ying-Yang), or the need to be friend with the enemy. The polarity entailed by this Full Moon and the astrological return of spring are explained through the famous springtime myth: Persephone Return. When the ever-youthful and beautiful Goddess of Spring returns, it becomes spring each year. She is a vegetation deity, for she personifies the cycle life-death-rebirth.

Where there is tension, there is struggle and, thus, a vital need balance of nature. The Libra Full Moon is the very one for that journey work. Light and Dark. Day and Night. This Full Moon is square to Pluto, Lord of the Underworld. With the Spring Equinox, Life leaps out of the shadows of winter to say I'm still here! Yay!!! Let's get this party started!!!, so as the snow melts, things re-emerge (Greek Goddess Persephone's equivalent is Roman Goddess Proserpina; the probable origin of her name comes from the Latin "proserpere" or re-emerge) in the mud and come out of the Sea .. Hello, Persephone! Welcome back.

Mars (Aries), the Warrior, the Hero, the Champion, the Protector, this is the part of us, born under the Libra Full Moon, that feels the outrage of injustice, and does something about it. This is also the part of us that has to make a choice. A vow, even, as to where all of that energy is going to go. Venus's (Libra) strong presence tells us about the nature of this choice: Love.

Prismacolor Colored Pencils

You've asked to see my basic painting process so here's one example.
I usually start off with a fairly detailed drawing, well after many thumbnail sketches and scribbles (which will never see the light of day! LOL ) Then with watercolors I create a solid foundation for the many layers of colored pencils that's applied on top. This base helps me be able to achieve the deep rich colors that I so love!

Samanta Vega Btw what kind of colored pencils? Love your work
Jane Starr Weils Art Prismacolor pencils. They are a lil on the waxy side but they are what I am familiar with.
Jane Starr Weils Art I don't usually use a blending solvent other than grabbing a lighter shade pencil to blend. Prisma color pencil also has a pencil that is labeled "blender" but mostly it's just to waxy so use a lighter shade as I said to blend. Plus when you work up many layers of these pencils, can almost blend them with your finger.
Samanta Vega thank you very much for sharing!! It's soo revealing, helpful and inspiring to learn from those whose work we admire so much. Behind a special art work there's always a special soul

Here's the full painting of "Flower Kisser"!

Jane Starr Weils Art on September 10, 2013.

Samanta Vega What numbers are the pencils you use for basic drawing? (I'm in Spain)
Jane Starr Weils Art Samanta, sometimes a 7B for the initial scribbling then an HB or something similar to hone the details.
Samanta Vega Ok! Thank you very much. I'll buy the 7B, and what number for the HB? Soo happy to discover such a generous soul behind your fey artwork
Samanta Vega Jane Starr Weils Art, please please, one more question: what bruhes should I buy to start painting with watercolors? Thank youu! I'll let you know
Jane Starr Weils Art As for brushes, I really don't have a particular brand...I tend to just go "pet" all the brushes (LOL) till one feels just right to me. I do prefer something with a long angled point I would say is a fave brush shape.

Here she is, Spring Solstice Witch! The final in this series of four!

Spring Solstice Witch breathes in the fresh fragrant spring air, a time when the earth blooms in it's renewal. She is surrounded by delicate apple blossoms, rabbits, tulips and daffodils as well as delicate lil robin eggs tucked in carefully crafted nests. On the standing stones is a symbol for life emerging from the earth and she has tucked under her hat a red Anemone in honor of Persephone.

Easter, Eostara and Persephone, Goddess of Spring

Easter

The other Christian holiday that is usually mixed up with this witches’ sabbat is Easter. Easter, too, celebrates the victory of a god of light (Jesus) over darkness (death), so it made perfect sense to the Christians to date the resurrection of Jesus during this season. Ironically, the name Easter derives from the name of the Teutonic lunar Goddess, Eostre (from whence we also get the name of the female hormone, estrogen), whose primary symbols were the hare (both for fertility and because her worshipers saw a hare in the full moon) and the egg (symbolic of the cosmic egg of creation). Christians have been hard-pressed to explain how these images relate to their religion. The Eostara, Eostre’s holiday, was held on the vernal equinox full moon. Of course, Christians don’t celebrate full moons, so they designated the following Sunday as Easter. If you’ve ever wondered why Easter seemed to move all around the calendar, this is why: Easter is always the first Sunday after the first full moon after the vernal equinox. In face, if Easter Sunday were to fall on the Full Moon itself, Easter would be postponed to the following Sunday!

Eostara

In recent years, some pagan traditions began referring to the spring equinox as Eostara. Historically, this is incorrect. Eostara is a lunar holiday, honoring a lunar Goddess, at the vernal equinox full moon. Therefore, the name Eostara is best reserved to the nearest esbat rather than the sabbat itself. Some of the same groups also misappropriated the term Lady Day for Beltane, which left no good folk name for the spring equinox. When Eostara was misappropriated for the spring equinox, a chain-reaction of displacement was completed. Needless to say, the old and accepted folk name for the vernal/spring equinox is Lady Day. Christians sometimes insist that the title is in honor of Mary and her Annunciation, but pagans and witches will smile knowingly.

Eostre (Old English. Old Germanic: Ostara. Proto-Germanic: Austro) is identical to Greek Goddess Eos and Roman Goddess Aurora (Encyclopedia Mythica, article: Ostara). Her other counterparts are the Dawn Goddesses Zorya (Slavic), Ushas (Indian Vedic).
In primitive agricultural societies natural phenomena, such as rainfall, the fecundity of the earth, and the regeneration of nature were frequently personified. One of the most important pagan myths was the search of the earth goddess for her lost (or dead) child or lover (e.g., Isis and Osiris, Ishtar and Tammuz, Demeter and Persephone). This myth, symbolizing the birth, death, and reappearance of vegetation, when acted out in a sacred drama, was the fertility rite par excellence.(The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition. 2001)

Persephone, Goddess of Spring

Tip Toe Through the Tulips

Daddofils, tulips and delicate apple blossoms are the floral elements that are a part of the Spring Solstice (Equinox) Witch, along with the animal company of hares and lil robins. She breathes in the fresh fragant spring air, a time when the earth blooms in its rebirth and renewal. She's the archetype of Goddess Persephone, who returns to the earth from the underworld (otherworld), and thus, is associated with spring and the seeds of the fruits of the fields, then being a vegetation goddess. A vegetation goddess is a nature deity whose disappearance and reappearance, or life, death and rebirth, embodies the growth cycle of plants ("el círculo verde de la savia sabia"). A vegetation deity is often a fertility deity. Greek Goddess Persephone (also called Kore) is called Proserpina (from Latin "proserpere", which means "to emerge") in Roman mythology, whose story is the basis of a myth of springtime.

Moonrakers

My last treasured discovery, Jane Starr Weils Art. She answered to me on facebook about her painting process: first, basic and fairly detailed pencil-drawing; then, with watercolors she creates a solid foundation for the many layers of prismacolor colored pencils that she applies on top, and that she likes so much for they help to achieve the deep rich colors she so loves! She doesn't usually use a blending solvent other than grabbing a lighter shade pencil to blend. The Quick Red Fox

Sobre el proceso .. the works, making process, the artist and the artist's family life style .. me recordó el modo de hablar, hacer y vivir tan poético, rústico y apegado a la Tierra de Euan The Potter: "If there is one lesson I learned from my apprenticeship with the National Living Treasure, Tatsuzo Shimaoka, it is this; the beauty of an object springs from the beauty of the process by which it was created."

Title: Prayer
Artist: Amanda Clark
Medium: Acrylic on Board

Clay. Ceramica. Euan The Potter. Modelling. Painting. They surely help one another. Euan Craig gained a BA in Ceramics Design at Latrobe University.

No sé ..
